Callout
This is a sincere callout for all compatriots to come together and support the Vietnamese Boat People Monument in South Australia.
To my fellow compatriots;
‘Boat People’ is a term usually associated with trauma. It correlates to the evacuation phenomenon of the Vietnamese people after the Vietnam civil war which occurred from 1954 to 1975. Millions of people left their homes, to be challenged by the ocean, with the impending fear of death. Only the pursuit of freedom and happiness made this worthwhile.
According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), between 200,000 and 400,000 boat people died at sea. The Boat People’s tragedy is an indictment of the Vietnamese Communist government.
After the 30th April 1975, deemed “The Fall of Saigon”, the Communist Party subjected its opponents to torture and imprisonment in Re-Education Camps, an injustice which is still felt all around the world today. We are the lucky ones who managed to reach the shores of a nation which embraces freedom and democracy. This, however, does little to mitigate the constant reminder of the many families who did not make it to their safe haven, the hundreds of thousands of our brethren who were laid to rest in the Sea.
This mass exodus awakened many across the world to the importance of freedom and democracy and the lengths people are prepared to go to in order to escape tyranny. We are the lucky ones. We found our freedom and security. Our pain will abate over time but our memory of these tragedies will not. In gratitude, we and our descendants are determined to contribute to the progress and advancement of world freedom and democracy.
Forty five years have passed, and now we finally have the chance to commemorate our fellow brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, friends and family who have died on their journeys. We will remember them and pray for them. We will remember their despair, their sacrifices and the countless lives lost in their quest for salvation.
The Vietnamese Boat People’s monument is a sacred symbol of heritage, of gratitude, of remembrance and of dreams coming true. Vietnamese refugees will now get to officially commemorate the hardship that has been endured, and to thank the Australian Nation that has given so much.
Today, we have built a Vietnamese Boat People Monument in South Australia. We are earnestly calling on our fellow countrymen to join us.
Warmest thanks and regards./-
